Hope to avoid being scammed!

Reading various blogs and travelogues is one of the many things I love to do in my free time. It’s not necessary that I plan to go to all these places I love reading about (though would love to travel everywhere if I could :-D) but I read them because it kind of give a glimpses to the lives and cultures of people living in different places and so many more things as well. And I have found that having this hobby of checking up everything about a place, its people, its culture, where to go, what to do, what to eat etc. etc. has helped me a lot when I actually visit a place/country. I love this entire process of researching which sort of helps in building up the excitement level to discover whether any of my readings would turn out to be of practical use. Moreover, my idea of a trip is exploring a place on my own without the help of any travel agencies or guides though sometimes it entails some difficulties. But nonetheless, it gives a totally different perspective of the entire journey.

As usual, I was reading some articles and it suddenly rekindled a particular memory. I found some very interesting articles on various tourist scams that exist in Thailand, mostly in Bangkok. In these blogs and travelogues, people shared their experiences of falling in the trap of these tourist scams. Every one of us know that tourist scams ranging from simplest to complex and intricately woven operations exist everywhere, but until and unless we know certain details on how these things operate or have personally experienced, we won’t be able to avoid when we actually run into one. Such articles are interesting to read as well as serve an eye opener for someone if they are planning to travel. Having some knowledge will definitely helped us in becoming street smart and in preparing for our trip.

Anyway, I am straying away from the main topic for which I started writing today. While I was going through one very interesting article, one very similar experience that I faced while I was in China came to my mind. Now that I think of it, I can’t help but feel how naive I was at that time and how easily I had fallen into that trap voluntarily. But I was a student then with not much experiences who believed such things don't exist. Do I sound like I am trying to provide an excuse for myself?? Hehe! Anyway, let me share the story.

This happened longtime back in 2009 when I and my hubby (boyfriend then :-D) decided to travel South China (FIRST MISTAKE) during our winter vacation.

Why is that? Because South China is miserable during winter. It's cold and wet, and the heating system sucks. Contrary to general conception, northern China during winter is actually a lot more comfortable because of the central heating system, and the habit of having heater in the room.

Anyhow, we hadn’t experience winter in any southern part of the country, so we decided Suzhou and Hangzhou would be the best places to go. I remember why we selected these two places. We came across this saying in Chinese about these two places- ‘“上有天堂,下有蘇杭”which is roughly translated as “Suzhou-Paradise in Heaven; and Hangzhou- Paradise in earth” during one of our Chinese language classes, and one of our teachers mentioned that these two places are very beautiful. So the choice was obvious.

The entire experience indeed turned out to be awesome and we loved every moment of it. For the first time, we were out of our comfort zone, travelling and exploring strange places relying only on maps and itinerary customized specially by myself. So, that trip holds a special memory for both of us except for one day, though it didn’t actually spoil our excitement or experience in any way. More than anything, I would say it was a learning experience because we learn from our stupidity and mistakes.

Cutting a long story short, it happened that after we visited Suzhou, we went to Hangzhou. We were in the city for one day, and next day decided to visit a lake called Qiandaohu which is some 150 kms from Hangzhou. The literal meaning of the lake is Thousand islets Lake because it has more than thousand islets.

Our hotel manager suggested us to go with a tour agency, so we booked one (SECOND MISTAKE). The guide and all the other tourists were Chinese natives. The tour bus came to pick us up and it all started well. The real thing started when the bus dropped us to a knife factory instead of directly driving us to the lake. At that point of time, we started having doubts for choosing this trip. We were asked to sit in a room after which one guy demonstrated how sharp and good the knives were-a ploy to trick us into buying their knives. To some extent, they were successful in their effort because some people indeed bought their knives. These people who bought looked too simple and naïve to understand the ploy. But at least we were not that gullible enough to buy anything. Yay! That was a consolation:-P

After this, we left the place and finally reached the lake. There, we took a boat and it dropped us off to an island. That particular island didn’t turn out to be what I had expected. I believe there were other more beautiful islands because I have seen pics of them. Don’t know why they didn’t take us there instead. May be that was also a part of the scam. The island didn’t have much to offer. There was one place which had some birds and animals for display more like a zoo; an ordinary looking temple like place-but after seeing so many beautiful temples in Beijing and other places, that was nothing but just a place to sit and gather our thoughts. I don’t even remember what else was there in that place coz there was nothing worthwhile to remember.

Lunch was on the boat and as expected, the food prices were sky high. Since that was the only option, everybody had lunch on the boat. I didn’t feel like eating and I don’t remember what we had for lunch also. May be we had fish because we were on a lake J
We were tired but it seemed these tour agency people weren’t a bit. Because on return journey also, they took us to two shops-one was a shop for silk and the other one was for something else I can’t recollect. The time we spent there was more than the actual time we spent at the lake. I kept hoping this shop hopping would be the last of it but alas! Our one day got completely wasted in visiting these shops while we could have just spend our entire day walking around Xihu lake in Hangzhou itself, taking in the breathtaking sceneries and watching the sunset. Sigh!

So at the end, it turned out our lake visit was not actually a Lake Visit but more of a shopping tour. Nothing dangerous or harmful happened to us because basically all these scams are meant to take money from us rather than to hurt us. So, I suppose our trick to outplay them should be to irritate them by not buying anything:-D This kind of things has happened to us in India as well once when we booked a cab through our hotel. That’s why I prefer to do everything on my own instead of going for tour packages.

My experience is nothing as compared to what I have read and heard. So, I can say I was lucky not to be scammed in a big way. And I hope I will avoid being scammed in the future as well J but this won’t deter me from exploring new and strange places in the future, just need to be careful, that’s it. So, I am just looking forward to my next big destination. Let’s see whether these readings and experience will help me there.

I believe it will definitely! :)

"All lies and jest, still, a man hears what he wants to hear and disregards the rest."- Simon & Garfunkel

‘Pretentious People-’ My God!

The world is full of ‘pretentious people’ who think they are the ‘know-it-all, done-it-all, and have-it-all’ so-called 'Privileged Group' while others are just plain dumb and exist only to listen to them while they just do blah blah. :-D They think their opinions matter most while others’ opinions are supposed to be thrown in the trash. They always have to have a say in any topic, small or big, whether they know it or not. So Funny huh! Because when you ask them what they are talking about in detail, they actually don’t know anything. All this time, they were just blabbering and nothing else. They must have heard somebody talking about something and then, they replicate the exact words but coated with a little dose of extra ‘fake intelligence’ to personalize it. Their intention is to drown out everybody’s voice so that they can impose their supremacy on others. But, what they fail to understand is that by doing all these, they are showing their inner insecurities and their inner desire to be taken importance by people. They are ignorant to the core which is visible to everyone but themselves.

Here, I can’t help remembering the saying “You cannot wake up someone who is only pretending to be asleep” that means that if people wish to remain ignorant of certain facts, there is no waking them up with the truth. Pretentious people don’t bother to make an effort and gather knowledge. Instead, they just continue irritating people. Oh, how much I pity these people! They use fake unabashedness and vivaciousness to prove that they are clever and important. But alas! Their attempt to impress anything that moves just doesn’t go well with anybody, not with me for sure. Ironically, no one who possesses these qualities ever needs to convince anyone of it. I just don't get the extent to which some people try too hard to be acknowledged. Why don’t they just let it go, take a chill pill, relax and enjoy life? Why bother so much?

I guess people have become so obsessed with self-image that ‘Pretentiousness’ has got deeply ingrained in their whole being. The level of competition between people has intensified to such an extent that people ends up comparing themselves to others all the time even for silly things. This got me thinking, why do people need validation from others who doesn’t matter at all in their life?

A Rendezvous with the French Riviera of the East!

People, heat and humidity! These are the words to describe my trip to Pondicherry. This doesn’t mean I did not enjoy the time out there in Pondicherry, a town tucked away on the Eastern seaboard of India. This is the former French colony and almost always referred to as ‘Pondy.’

We (We, as usual, referring to I and my hubby) reached the place on December 25, yes, Christmas Day! Thought we would celebrate Christmas there. So, as soon as we reached the place, we rented a two-wheeler from the hotel and went directly to Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. And imagine what we found! Beggars and beggars everywhere…The church has some beautiful architectures but people had made the place so dirty that we didn’t want to stay there for long. The first thought that came to my mind at that point of time- why the church was not properly maintained? I mean, for God’s sake, the church is being listed as one of the top tourist places in Pondy. People, like us, who rely on Google and Lonely Planet to do some basic research before visiting any places would come to the place for sure. And what would they find?? Litters and loitering beggars everywhere, Hmmm…Disappointing!

Anyway, our next stop was again a church, this one is called- Eglise de Sacre Coeur de Jesus Church. I liked this church much more than the first one- a pink coloured church with attractive stained glass panels, and to our delight, much cleaner with no litters and beggars around. We sat inside the church for some time and tried to imbibe the peace emanating from the place. J

After wandering for quite some time in the so-called French Colony, characterized by small lanes lined with colourful buildings and shops, we headed for the Promenade. Oh, how thrilled we were to see the vast expanse of water! So much worth coming to Pondy for this only! We couldn’t wait to go to Paradise Beach after seeing the first glimpse of sea. Before that, we had breakfast at the famous Le Café to quest our hunger and more so, refueled our energy for the next destination.J Nice view of the sea from this restaurant, could sit there for eternity to enjoy the breeze and the view. But with so many people thronging the place and waiting for anybody to make the tables free, we could not be so selfish. So we left the place and drove to the main place for which we went to Pondy-The Paradise Beach.

OMG! I had heard that this beach is an isolated one where fewer people visit. But to our horror, we found a long line of peoples waiting to buy tickets for the boat that would take them to the island beach. Adding to our woes was the hot and humid weather which was proving too much for people like us who hailed from the northeast part of India and who had been staying in B’lore. Hmm…what can we do but wait, so wait we did. After standing in the line for more than 1 hour, we finally boarded a boat and reached the beach. And what a Delight it was! Oh, I so loved the place, the water, the sands, everything. We played in the water, took snaps, watched people playing, and sat there for long just watching the sea. Then, a sudden fear hit me by thinking that the water which we were enjoying at one moment can turn out to be destroyer in another second. Just thinking how powerful natural forces can be gave me goose bumps. Tsunami, earthquake, cyclones and other natural forces can destroy this beautiful earth in a blink. But, who are to be blamed for all these? Obviously, we are the culprits who have disturbed the earth’s natural environment for our selfish interests. Who gave us the right to play with nature and disturb the natural cycle. We urgently need to adopt some practices to reverse all these and follow them to the core.

Coming back to the original track, we bid adieu to the place after spending a really wonderful time and headed to our hotel to get some needed rest. Next day’s plan was to go to Mahabalipuram. In anticipation of another nice day ahead, we hit the sacks after having a French dinner at one of the French restaurants in French Colony. So many French things going on J which is obviously normal since we are in the "The French Riviera of the East."

Year of the Horse

According to the Chinese Lunar Calender, the Chinese Zodiac, known as Sheng Xiao (生肖), is based on a twelve year cycle, each year in that cycle related to an animal sign.

The twelve animal signs that the Chinese uses to predict people's fortune are Rat, Cow, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Sheep, Monkey, Chicken, Dog and Pig.

And the year 2014 is Horse Year (马年) for the Chinese. The Year of the Horse starts from January 31, 2014 (the Lunar New Year / Spring Festival of China) and will lasts till Feb. 18, 2015.

According to Chinese beliefs, horse is a sign of speedy success besides being a symbol of traveling. Chinese wouldn't let horse do the farm work. Instead, all the farmland jobs go to the ox. This is because Chinese have higher expectation on horses. Horses can help humans win battles and wars. Sitting on the horse back implies that the person is from noble or higher ranking family.

There are many stories and legends that narrate how these animals were selected to represent each of the twelve years. More on the stories in the next blog :-)

Anyway, Happy Chinese New Year to everybody.

A Typical Pisces

When my two fishes are going in opposite directions it’s hard to stick to my decision.

Indecisiveness has become my stigma. If I must take a decision: which way to go? If I did take a decision: was it the best? If I talked: did I say the right words? If I didn’t talk: why didn’t I say anything? If I chose something: did I make the right choice? And so on, my entire life is an argument.  The debate runs with the same pathos, either for insignificant or major matters.

I really wonder whether all the Pisces go through the same as I do!! May be they do, and we can share our experiences and learn from them. And maybe it can offer an emotional succor to all of us. Who Knows!!

My indecisiveness irritates people who are close to me. But more than that, I am pissed off with myself due to this typical Pisces character. Hmmm!! Everybody has two facets of their life- a positive one and a negative one. In my case, I guess the negative facet overwhelms, most of the time. Today, I am this amazing girl brimming with positive energy and ready to conquer the world. And tomorrow, I am this dull, depressing and disappointing girl who thinks nothing's gonna work out. And I’m left in this CONFUSED STATE OF MIND for quite some time.

It takes a lot of hard work for me and for the one who is the closest to me to pull me out from this state. And I'm thankful that I have an amazing husband who plays this role perfectly and always try to instill some sense in me. Hopes everybody has someone or other who will give them the required jolt once in a while! ;-)

"Travel, in the younger sort, is a part of education; in the elder, a part of experience"- Francis Bacon

I have been bitten by a travel bug since long but didn't really set out to fulfill my desires. I have been staying in B’lore since the past 2 years and never have I gone out from my comfort zone, which in my case is just staying at home, watching TV and doing some novel-reading, or visiting various malls, which are the trademarks of India’s Silicon City. If I have to give an excuse for this laid-back attitude of mine, I can say I didn't have a traveling partner. Moreover, I am not that kind of person who loves traveling alone because I need to share the moments with someone I love and comfortable with. Earnest Hemingway said, "NEVER GO ON TRIPS WITH ANYONE YOU DO NOT LOVE." Most of all, I need someone who can click my pics all the time :-P However, I really appreciate those solo travelers who have the guts to travel alone and explore strange places. Hats off to them!

Getting married (June, 2013) and having a husband, I found my traveling partner, finally! Then the day came when we decided to start our first trip of exploring South India, obviously South India because I am staying in B’lore currently. So, our first destination was Coorg :-)

Coorg- the anglicized name of Kodagu is an administrative district in Karnataka, India. The British planter community was mostly Scots. It was they who affectionately called Coorg ‘The Scotland of India’ because of the many uncanny similarities. Since I have not been to Scotland, I can’t really say in what ways these two places have uncanny similarities.

Moving on, we booked bus tickets from the ksrtc website in advance. We need to have an account to book bus tickets on this website. Next was to search for a good place to stay. I started an “in-depth research” on various travel sites, looking for a nice, comfortable but pocket-friendly place for many days. I found this home stay known as Beehive in Ammathi town. The reviews for this were mostly positive. My husband’s role in this planning was that he called up the owner of this home stay for booking a bamboo cottage for two nights. Pretty reasonable rate!  I would like to add a word of caution here-Ammathi town is very far from Madikere or Mercara, the principal town and district capital, and other major tourist places. If one has transport vehicles at their disposal, it won’t pose much of a problem. Anyway, all the major tourist places in Coorg are separated by approximately 10-20 kms from each other. The only exception may be Raja’s Seat and Abbey Falls which are in Madikere. About Ammathi Town, it is a small and quiet town, really ideal for some soul-searching, for whoever is interested. :-)

We took all the available transportation options :-D  We commuted on government and private buses, autos and taxis. Hell lot of an experience that was!
I have attached pics of the places we visited during the three days and two nights visit. I like the view of sunset at Raja’s seat and the view of River Cauvery at Dubare Reserve Forest & Elephant Camp. The Tibetan monastery at Byle Kuppe is also a nice place. But we have seen several monasteries during our one-year stay in China, so this was a miniature version for us. Still, the place was really worth-visiting. We missed some places like Talacauvery & Bhagamandala and some temples. These are all religious places though they offer some nice views.

Special thanks goes to my hubby who untiringly took all the pics when I posed :-P The credit goes to me as well since I gifted him with a Nikon DSLR 5100 camera on his B’day :-D That was a real motivation for him to take my pics, I MUST SAY!

The more I travel, the more I feel like sharing the experiences and the moments. Through the pics, we want to relive those times when we could just enjoy the sights and sounds of strange but beautiful places. During such times, we almost forget all the pressures and tensions that are inevitably associated with this modern and hectic day-to-day lifestyle. Enjoy the pics! :-)
